Sexual Orientation

The one individual feels for another. The American Psychological Association defines sexual orientation as a continuum that ranges from pure (sexual attraction only to the opposite sex) to pure (attraction only to the same sex), and establishes the clinical perspective that any sexual orientation along the continuum may be normal and may change from one relationship to another. Scientists do not know what determines sexual orientation though believe it to be a complex interaction among genetic, biological, social, and psychological factors. Sexual orientation may become a health concern when sexual behavior creates risk to self and others through exposure to (STDs) or causes emotional conflict and distress that interferes with the person’s ability to form and maintain intimate relationships.
